The Breakdown: How to Choose the Right Toner for Your Skin

by Editorial Team |

Toner is often dismissed as a non-essential skincare step, mostly because it's unclear what it can really do for your skin. But the truth is, if you choose wisely, a toner can be fundamental to your skincare routine.

Toners can come in many forms and are designed for different skin types and concerns. Here’s a quick rundown of how to choose a facial toner to suit your skin.

Use A Nourishing Toner For Dry or Normal Skin:

Opt for a nourishing, balancing toner (like our Bounce Back toner!) that is specifically formulated with hydrating ingredients. Nourishing toners are designed to help your skin retain moisture thanks to ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

While it's best for dry skin, nourishing toners are suitable for almost all skin types, and can be used twice a day—once in the morning, and once at night. Use it after cleanser and follow-up with a facial serum and moisturiser.

Use An Exfoliating Toner For Oily or Acne-prone skin:

Opt for a toner with exfoliating properties if your skin is oily or acne-prone. These types of toners will often contain ingredients such as glycolic acid (BHA) and salicylic acid (AHA) that help to gently dissolve dead skin cells and keep acne, breakouts and excess oiliness at bay, without drying out your skin.

It is best to only use this type of toner once a day, at night – over doing it can cause your skin to be become sensitive. Additionally, be mindful about mixing this type of toner with a separate exfoliant, be it physical or chemical.  If you choose a separate chemical exfoliant, only use it once or twice a week as it will most likely have higher concentrations of AHAs and BHAs.

If you have sensitive skin or suffer from redness:

If you're skin is sensitive, you'll want to stay away from alcohol-based toners or exfoliating toners (with strong percentages of AHAs or BHAs) as they could be too harsh for your skin. Opt for a hydrating toner with moisturising ingredients and humectants like glycerin or aloe vera, that will soothe and hydrate your skin without irritation.

Avoid Alcohol-Based Facial Toners

Popularly known by the term ‘astringents,' these toners were once highly popular because they were said to kill bacteria and get rid of excess oil effectively. While alcohols in your skincare are not necessarily all-bad, alcohol-based products have a tendency to dry out your skin and can irritate sensitive skin. It's best to steer clear of these types of toners, especially if you have dry and/or sensitive skin.
